We pulled out of the Everglades and drove up to Hwy 41 (Tamiami Trail) and West to Midway Campground (midway between Miami and Naples). A total drive of about 80 miles. We opted for this campground as it has electric and we had been 8 days in the Everglades without. It is run by the National Park Service so the Golden Age Passport is honored for a 50% discount (bonus!...
. There are 4 other primitive campgrounds along this stretch of road... some fairly close to 41 and others very remote and primitive. All totally free! My tenting buddies would like them!
The main visitor center of the Big Cypress Preserve (used to be 'Swamp') is just 3 miles W. down 41. Tons of Gators and birds of many types can be seen from the boardwalk out front. Photographer Clyde Butcher has a gallery close by.... the 'Ansel Adams of the Everglades' wonderful work... huge, large-format black and white prints. Very impressive.
In our four days at this location, we drove back East to the Shark Valley Slough visitor center which is the Northern access point for the Everglades. A wonderful walk and tons more of Alligators, Egrets, Herons, Turtles, etc. Drove the 26 mile long gravel 'loop road' through the Big Cypress Swamp. Tons more Gators and birds.
We hiked all the trails and drove every road in the vicinity. Drove 26 miles West to Everglades City a couple times. Found interesting places to eat and drink. (Rod & Gun Club, Camellia St. Grill, Havana Cafe) ... Celebrated New Years' with dinner out, then Champagne with our neighbors Frank & Barb, in their 34' Airstream at Midway Camp. Explored the tiny town of Chokoloskee, South of Everglades City on an island. Found the country's smallest post office at Ochopee.
This was a very cool area, with tons to see and do and we had a great time here.
