We made our way south from Mammoth Cave on I-65 down to Nashville, TN... about 95 miles. From there you better have a GPS or Google Maps to find the start of the Natchez Trace! West on I-40 about 7 miles. off on Hwy 100, then a bunch of turns through residential neighborhoods, etc... will finally bring you to the 'Trace'. It's actually the end of the Trace... mile marker 440... mile '0' being at the 'start' in Natchez, MS. Once on the Parkway it's a very nice, leisurely drive... 50 mph max for the next 440 miles! Don't be in a hurry. Lots of pull-offs and view points, picnic areas, streams, waterfalls, points of historical interest abound. We traveled 55 miles down to mm 385 (mile marker). Meriweather Lewis Campground. Here is where the leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition... and Governor of Louisiana, lost his life. Some say by suicide... others by murder... a gunshot wound for sure... while staying at Griner's Stand (a wayside roadhouse)... on his way to Washington... to explain his disputed expense records of the expedition. His actual grave and a monument are here... a broken column. Gotta tip your hat to a guy like that. The campground is nice, paved, wooded and quiet. Flush toilets, no hook-ups.. potable water available. FREE. Woo-hoo! What more could a guy ask for?
