Drove 160 total miles... started out from Seminole Canyon, headed toward Marathon. Got gas in Langtry at $2.88 per gallon. Drove through town but didn't stop at the Judge Roy Bean Museum (the Law West of the Pecos). [Although known as the 'hanging judge', oddly enough, there is no evidence that he ever sentenced anyone to hang!] I'd advise everyone to fill-up on gas in every decent-sized town, to avoid having to top-off in little towns. The difference can be 40¢ a gallon! Stopped in Sanderson for lunch and got advice from the owner of the Roundhouse Cafe, to stay over night at Alpine instead of Marathon, a much bigger town with a large food store. She said Alpine was 'right next door'... ... turns out, in Texas, that means 32 miles! We took her advice and by-passed Marathon which was quite small, as she said, with no large food store. Alpine was quite a nice little town. It had a small college, Sul Ross State University, and a large 'Thriftway' food store, a very nice, large Ace Hardware, several restaurants and diners, boot store, liquor store, propane available... all the necessities We stayed at KC's QuickMart & RV Park... our first time in an 'RV park' in two years of full-time winter travels... first time ever in seven years of trailer camping. It wasn't so bad, decent price, nice bathrooms, showers and laundry... and convenient for our need to re-stock all our supplies. We ate dinner at 'Penny's Diner', apparently a Southwest chain. It looked kinda like a long Airstream... all silvery and 50's retro... lots of James Dean posters. Kinda fun. We got gas at $2.62 a gallon. We re-stocked all our food, propane (first tank of the trip), beer and booze. I'd advise all to re-stock all provisions prior to heading into Big Bend for any length of stay. Gas was $2.98 per gallon. Ice is $2.64 for an 8 lb. bag. For comparison, gas has been averaging between $2.29 and $2.49 a gallon on the trip thus far.

Hope you stocked up on goodies in Alpine before going to the Big Bend! BiBe is a wonderful National Park--be sure to take advantage of any Park Ranger programs that are available--very knowledgeable staff. Some of our favorite hikes are Santa Elena Canyon, Cattail Falls and Chisos Mountains. You will see many old Airstreams around Terlingua and there is a Mall there
