We stopped here for a one-nighter on the way home. We left Independence, Mo and drove across Missouri on I-70 and into Illinois. Then North on I-55.... 16 miles off the freeway to the park. SE of Springfield, for a total of 330 miles.
The park was on a pretty large, spread out reservoir-type lake. Strangely, there was NO swimming allowed! There were two separate campgrounds, very open but clean. The view was pretty on the edge of the water. The place was nearly empty, with electric but no on-site water! Several pit toilets and one modern bathhouse at some distance. The ranger still came around and socked us $20!. We told him it was the most expensive of the whole trip... with no water hook-ups!. No discounts for seniors unless an IL resident. He laughed and said he thought Wisconsin was higher. I would not recommend camping in Illinois. Not a good value.
We stayed only overnight and never un-hooked the trailer. In the morning, we left early and drove home.

$20-25 nomal in Illinois
Hi, just wanted to comment that $20-25 is normal here in IL for a state park. Holiday weekends can be as high as $35 a night. Most of what you described is similar to what we experience in IL State Parks. Electricity and Dumping stations only. If you want water it is usually not ta the sight.Posted 04-18-2009 at 03:31 PM by Gael79
