We pulled North about 100 miles for a little side trip to see Falling Waters and Florida Caverns State Parks. We camped at Falling Waters State Park near Chipley, FL. A pleasant enough place, not real 'private' but quiet. We hiked a few trails and saw the highest waterfall in Florida... 73 feet!... The falls drop into a 100' deep by 20' wide sinkhole!... and disappear! There is no stream going out. A dye test does not reveal where the water goes!
We walked all the trails and around the falls and sinkholes a couple times. I found an Eastern Box Turtle by the parking lot to the falls. Watching a Northern Mockingbird going through his repertoire of songs... unlike anything I'd ever heard. Amazingly diverse!
We took a day trip 15 miles or so to the East to see Florida Caverns State Park. Well worth the trip! The caverns are amazing. They were excavated by the CCC in the 30's. When they were discovered, they only had a crawl space of about one foot! It took 30 to 40 men 5 years to excavate the floor down 3 or 4 feet so you can walk through the place. They went in on their stomachs with pick axes, buckets and head lamps! The park also had a nice visitor center (where I succumbed to the desire to buy a small, ceramic flute from Peru), nice trail through the woods, river for canoeing, equestrian center for people to bring horses and a very nice, wooded, private campground. We wished we had stayed here! There's also a little golf course right next door, also part of the park. Nice place.
