We made an early (ha!) start away from our home on Crooked Lake, near Delton, MI.... around 11am-ish... after blowing out the pipes & winterizing the drains & traps, etc.
We made the drive down to Big Bone Lick State Park, Kin-tuck-yee
.... about 330 miles in 6 hours.
This park is the 'home of American Vertebrate Paleontology' (Wooley Mammoths, Mastodons & Giant Sloths died here by the thousands in the marshy ground of the salt licks... on the edge of the great glaciers of the last ice-age... about 15,000 years ago. The bones were first found in 1739!).
Big Bone Lick is just down the road from Beaver Lick and just South of Sugartit... I kid you not! Also close by is Rabbit Hash...
go figure.
We spent two cold, rainy, un-remarkable days but were met by our good friend Doug Day, who always brightens our spirits
We are planning campsites mainly by our 'Free Campgrounds' book. We were planning on spending $8.50 per night with hook-ups (off season rates) but were told they (Kentucky State Parks) had decided to postpone the 'off season' date to 11/16! ...so we had to pay full price of $19.80 per night (after a 10% senior discount). Most of the facilites were shut down ... pool, store, wood sales, etc. We did have elec. & water. Took a little hike and saw the small herd of Buffalo that are kept here. Got in a funny game of miniature golf on the debris-covered course.... the rules were to move nothing!.... leaves, sticks, ice, etc
It was freezing at night.
Thurs. 11/13 we took a side trip down the road to Rabbit Hash on the Ohio river... a very interesting little burg founded in 1831... well worth the effort to find the place
A local lady at the store asked us... "are you lost!?"
On Fri. morning 11/14 we sadly said our byes to Doug (with the possibility of meeting up somewhere else in the trip) & pushed on to the Great Smokey Mountains, TN...
..... to be continued.
