Drove 160 miles east on I-40 to Tucumcari, then departed from old route 66 and headed up US 54 on a NE diagonal. See map for route and roads. Nice to get off the 'blue highways'. Only problem on the narrower, two-lane blacktops... is when a big rig passes the other way, sometimes their 'air wave' makes my side mirror fold back and hit my side window. It can scare the be-jeepers outta 'ya.. even though you suspect it might happen. I hate that! We made camp in a large county/city park we found in our 'Free Campgrounds' guide. Full hook-ups for $15 a night but the bathrooms are so far away we can't find them! Kinda overlooks the small Rita Blanca Lake. Lots of people picnicking for Easter, but no one else here camping. It's just a gravel parking lot, nothing special. Must not be quite 'officially' open yet... no payment envelopes in the box! Ended up being a free night Never did see or find a bathroom. Never took a picture around the camp site. We hauled out early.
