We drove over from Death Valley... about 270 miles... past Las Vegas, across the N.W. corner of Arizona, through the canyon of the Virgin river, into Utah. See map for route and roads. Zion was a spectacular marvel! The most fabulous valley I have ever seen, excepting Yosemite. Again, running out of adjectives and superlatives. The sweep of the valley, the majesty of the rocks, the water from the Virgin River... all contribute to making this one of the most magnificent places I've ever seen. The town of Springdale, just outside the entrance, is touristy and cutesy. Many little restaurants, over-priced of course... lots of shops and galleries. Magnificent location. We camped the first 2 nights in South Campground... no hook-ups. Then switched to Watchman Campground with electricity for $1 more! Weather was grand. The place is quite busy... more-so since it is now 'spring break'. I hadn't planned on that! Lots of rock climbers and people all over all the trails. We did the shorter trails... Rivers End, Emerald Pools, Grotto. Drove the switchbacks up over the pass and through the long tunnel to the East side... a totally different rock formations and feeling to this side. We have to start moving along now. 40 days left in the trip... still 18 places to see Getting discouraged because we can't see Bryce. It's 8,000' elevation and still low teens at night. I'm going to have to modify my plans and skip past some places. Already missed Red Rock Canyon to the West of Las Vegas... and Valley of Fire, to the North of L.V. up by Lake Mead. Oh-well... Que sera! Another year!
