Drove north from Okeechobee up US 98/441, then west on FL 60 at Yeehaw Junction, to US 98 in Bartow, then north to Dade City and right on River Road to park. Total of 164 miles. Just setting up we saw 3 Bald Eagles overhead. Toward evening of second day, caught a quick glimpse of a Swallow-tailed Kite. Got a good grab-shot for a positive ID. A lifer for me! Every day Red-shouldered Hawks vying for a mate. Killdeer all over the field feeding, along with Pine Warblers. On Friday, people began setting up for a big run, 'Dances with Dirt'. On Saturday, 450 runners showed up and some took off as early as 5:30 am! They had several courses set up through the woods… 5k, 10k, 15k, up to 50 miles! This is extreme trail running, crossing a river, etc. The 50 mile winner was in at 7hrs 45mins! Came back from dinner on Friday and were surrounded by 8 RV's! It seems the local astronomy club comes out on the weekend of the New Moon. We were invited to gaze through a home-made telescope at Jupiter and its four moons. Very cool. Nice trails to walk here. Tons of Gopher Tortoise burrows. Fair (Verizon) cell signal and Wi-Fi. Brand new dump station, restroom and showers going in soon! Huge field to camp primitive for $5. Water & Electric for $20. Hope the prices don't increase. We stayed here to go to Donna's sister's grandson's wedding on Sunday. Left on Monday.
