Drove through Pensacola with the help of our new GPS, which loves cities, then east on US 98 through towns like Navarre, Destin, Miramar, Panama City and Port St. Joe.
Total miles 170… took 5 hours and 45 minutes including lunch stop! Average speed about 45 mph. Leisurely. Got into camp in a drizzly rain, overcast all day. Not the kind of weather you'd like for a visit to the most expensive park on one of the best beaches of the trip. Dang. Took our favorite site, #52… right next to the boardwalk over the dune to the ocean. The rollers were rolling and the sunset mostly obscured. Went out to eat at the Coneheads around 7 pm, but they were closed The ranger told us they closed at 4 pm and re-opened at 6 pm. NOT. Their hours are very much in flux, especially this time of year… the doldrums here in Florida, the slowest of the tourist seasons. It gets much busier after Christmas, and again busier after the New Year, when the greater influx of snowbirds occurs. Went further down the road to the Trading Post for pizza, but they were closed as well. Dang. Headed back to camp and settled for grilled cheeses… with sliced dill pickles. yum. Rained most all night, raining in the morning, supposed to rain until 5 pm. Dangit. Took a nice, hot shower. Good, intelligent shower design, real faucet, no push-buttons, good hot water, heated bathroom. Also, no phone signal, very poor internet and poor TV. Rather surprising what with Port St. Joe just across the bay. Next day, went out for lunch and got a pizza at the Cape Trading Post, not bad. Drove around the park and observed some wildlife and birds. Walked out on the beach. Cold, gray, windy, drizzly, calm surf. Watched Brown Pelicans diving into the surf. Talked to a guy last night from Seattle, who we've run into 3 times in 4 years. Twice here and once in Big Bend. Funny how you start to see the same folks here and there. He recognized us by the small trailer, with canoe. He's got the same set-up. Funny. Observed many Cardinals in camp today. Eight on the ground at one time! They were not being too cordial to one another. Saw one male grab another by the tail feathers and swing him around in circles. Funny stuff. Today was 12/12/12. Some people making a big deal out of it. Funny. Won't happen again until 01/01/01. 88 years and 20 days. Funny. Some days are just funny.
