Drove east on US 84, then onto US 98 at Bude, crossed I 55 and continued east (so as to stay off the blue highways), south on MS 27, which turns into LA 25 at the state line, and straight south into Mandeville, then just a few miles east on US 109 to the park. Total 128 miles. Monday we drove into New Orleans and spent the day walking around, people watching, window shopping, eating and eating more. I enjoy photographing around the city. Each visit seems to yield very different results as my vision of the city changes. I find it endlessly fascinating. As life.
This trip we ate at: Coffee & beignets at Du Monde's, Coop's Place on Decatur, Johnny's Po-Boys, Acme Oyster House, beers at the Kerry and Flannigan's. Also, on the north shore… Mandina's in Mandeville, Vianne's Tea House, Liz's 'Where Dat?' and Rips' on the Lake. It was wonderful! Spent several days lazing around camp, resting our stomachs. Did a little walking to try and compensate.
Notes on the Causeway and Streetcars… It costs $3 going into the city, free getting out! If your vehicle is over 7' high, the fee is doubled! (leave your canoe in camp! ) Streetcars are cheap. $1.25 each time on, .25¢ for a transfer. However, a $3 day pass may be a better deal. Seniors (over 65 with ID) ride for .40¢ a pop. Such a deal!!!
Fontainebleau had its boardwalk wiped out by Hurricane Isaac this year, cabins are still closed also. However, they have REDUCED their price to $18 per night! Showers were quite good. Push-button type but with a long timer limit, not overly hot but adequate. Excellent TV and internet reception. Free Wi-Fi.
