On the Trace, we only had 55 miles to go (plus an extra 10 miles off the Trace on MS 4 into the recreation area on Bay Springs Lake). I cannot more highly recommend the drive down the Trace! Max speed 50 mph, no commercial hauling. Two lane, winding, (if a road such as this has many curves or bends, why don't we call it 'curvy' or 'bendy'. Why do we call it 'windy' when it does not have 'winds' in it… and it's so easily confused with 'windy', as in high winds blowing? Another inexplicable bend and curve in the 'windy' English language. So confusing) smooth blacktop, numerous pull-outs, view points, rest and picnic areas, historical points of interest. Indian mounds 2000 years old, civil war battlefields, bits of the 'old trace' to walk on, old lodging and stores or 'stands'. The views and the drive is so mellow and sublime, not magnificent like mountains or ocean views, but so gentle and peaceful… the drive is a relaxing wonder int his world of hurry. Still, I have never driven the Trace slow enough, nor with enough stops, to satisfy my curious nature. I so highly recommend the trip. I am thinking of making a resolve to search out all the 'parkways' in the country and putting them on my bucket list. Got off the Trace at mile marker 297, MS 4 and wound around the bottom of Bay Springs Lake to Piney Grove recreation area. The lake is really a reservoir on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, dug and managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), it connects the Gulf of Mexico to the Tennessee River… some 459 miles of navigable waterway for commercial hauling. Last night we saw the lights of a huge barge or freighter chug by in the dark, lights blazing, heavy diesels low-chugging, barely moving what appeared to be about 3 mph. Huge. Estimated at least 200 feet long.
There are Grebes here… gulls and Great Blue Herons… and Loons! my favorite, though they call but rarely this time of year, a treat at every sight and sound.
The campground here is very fine. Not nearly as 'cemented' as many COE campgrounds, but all with water and electric… and hot showers! The woods are beautiful… oaks and pines, Sweetgum and maples… many others beyond my recognition. Of 141 sites, there are 6 campers here. Almost all the sites are 'water-front'. Check this place out! It's a true gem. Closes on 11/30. Spent all day Sat. and Sun. just hanging out, relaxing… slipping into the winter travel-camping mode. Had a nice fire each night of scrounged left-over wood. Perfect. Lows in the low 40's, highs in the mid 60's. Perfect.
