We left Carlsbad on Thursday and headed away from the San Diego area... down the busy I-5 and east out I-8. Please see map for roads and route. About 200 miles. We went back to the Salton Sea. Warm and cheap Stayed 6 days and just relaxed in the warm sun (one day of clouds and wind). At 226' below sea level, it's nearly as deep as Death Valley... at 282' below sea level. If you measure from the bottom of the sea, the difference is only 5 feet! Visited 'Slab City' east of Niland. An amazing group of folks living free out in the desert. Bought a used solar panel from a guy who's been there in the winter, selling them since the mid 80's! It's only 55w so will only contribute a 'trickle charge' (of about 3 amps) to my batteries. I think I need about 160 watts! More power! Another day we drove out N. E. of Mecca and 5 miles up a dirt road to Painted Canyon. Nice hike up the slot canyon to interesting colors in the rock formations. On the way back out we came to a bright, shiny yellow Corvette convertible... buried to the axles in the loose sand (of the 4-wheel drive only road! . Luckily I had a length of rope and managed to pull them out. Silly girl. A very relaxing stay. Not the most lovely countryside around, but the Sea kinda grows on you. Watching the gulls and pelicans and various shore birds... watching the sun go down behind snow-capped mountains. Aaaahhhhh.
