We drove up through the mountains on SR 78 through Julian. What a pretty drive! Please see map for roads and route. Only about 85 miles... but it took a lot longer than I thought because I drive with such caution on narrow, unfamiliar mountain roads. Arrived on a Sunday and we immediately hit the road to drive down the coast and hike in the Torrey Pines. Wonderful trees and cliffs along the coast. Next day we went to the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park. Lots o wonderful animals! A little rain but had a great time! Next day we took the 'Coaster' train down the coast to San Diego ($6 round-trip for seniors!). We toured the aircraft carrier Midway. Amazing history of naval aircraft. Huge. Impressive. Well-worthwhile. Next day we drove down to La Jolla to see the seals. Harbor Seals now inhabit the old 'Children's Pool' on the coast, right in town... and give birth to their pups each spring. Gorgeous area. Trendy, artsy, cute and affluent little town. Can't imagine how out-of-sight are the coastal properties in this area! Had a great, relaxing visit with Kathy, Casey and the boys. Good quality time together... generous hospitality and kind help during our visit. Thanks so much! Our first nights in a bed other than the Bambi in over 3 months!
