Drove up out of Organ Pipe, through Why, Ajo and west towards Yuma on I-8. See map for route and roads. Had a nice lunch in Wellton, tried to head up SR 95 toward Imperial Dam... found some bridge washed out, had to circle back around, finally took I-8 nearly into Yuma, then got on SR 95 north, then west at the Yuma Proving Grounds (army tanks, artillery and desert warfare). Across the Colorado River (or what's left of it) and into CA. ... 220 miles... See map for route and roads.
Found our way up into the Imperial Dam Recreation Area and LTVA (long-term visitor's area) for very cheap RV camping. Now, I realize this appeals to a great many people... hundreds and thousands of RV-ers camping all over the desert mesas and in huge groups... $40 for 2 weeks... or free on lots of BLM land... RVs everywhere. But this was not for us. I thought this was some of the most God-awful, butt-ugly real estate I've ever seen. Talked to the lady at the contact station t South Mesa and heard about a little lake and marsh area down the road and about 5 miles back in on an un-marked gravel road.... Mittry Lake Wildlife Area. Headed out there. Turned out the camping was on wide pull-outs along the gravel road. Lots of traffic... 'till 9 pm... started again at 5 am. Some ya-hoo was shootin' of his gun... in a marsh with campers all over the place! Lots of fast fishing boats. We left next morning.
