Drove 170 miles from Chiricahua National Monument. Went down to the border, up through Sunizona , Bisbee and Tombstone. See MAP for Route and Roads.
Got a decent campsite in a crowded campground. Not private but a nice view of the lake and a short walk down the trail to launch the canoe. The non-electric area is much less crowded. I think any lake is at a premium in Arizona. The towns of Bisbee and Tombstone were both cutesy and touristy, but probably worth the stop.
We hiked out the birding trail east along the lakeshore. The trail split into many cowpaths and we took a wrong one up into a dry wash canyon. Had to scramble up some rock faces, maybe 30 feet high or so... Donna was not happy. Climbing up out of the canyon we had to hike cross-country over some hills of coarse rock... and finally found our way back down to the creek. Many cow paths to choose from to follow our way back to the lake and our camp. Saw a Curved-billed Thrasher. On the lake were dozens of American Coots and Mallards... also saw Ruddy Ducks and an American Widgeon. Later, we took a short canoe ride around the lake. Saw Neotropical Cormorants and what may have been an Eared Grebe. Had our first camp fire in a very long time. All-in-all a pleasant stay, though no phone, internet or TV signals whatsoever.
