Drove down from Roper Lake State Park... a short jaunt of 77 miles... a very short piece on I-10. See MAP for Route and Roads.
Got a nice site in Bonita Canyon Campground... a beautiful little campground! Donna's favorite of the trip thus far! Rain and over a foot of snow just two days before our arrival made Bpnita Creek come alive with music that livened the camp. Forested with an unusual mix of trees at an elevation of 5400', there were Ponderosa Pine, Douglas Fir, Alligator Juniper, Arizona Sycamore, Mexican Pinion Pine and Prickly Pear Cactus! Four eco-systems merge here. The northern edge of the Chihuahuan Desert meets the southern edge of the Sonoran and the southern tip of the Rocky Mountains meets the northern tip of the Sierra Madres from Mexico. The Mexican (Gray-breasted) Jays were numerous, gregarious and sociable. fascinating place. We drove up to the end of the road... into the fog and clouds. The view-point at Massai Point was spectacular. At 6870' we had a few snow flurries as we looked out over the 'Wonderland of Rocks'. The columns of rocks are stupendous and unbelievable... dozens and hundreds of them! Balanced rocks everywhere! Unfortunately the mountain trails were snow-covered and icy and we didn't hike except down Bonita Creek to Faraway Ranch and Stafford Cabin. Interesting histories going back into the days of the Apache Wars.
