Yes, we hang clothing in that wasted space. I use hangers with clips for a skirt or pants and a hanger for tops, so a complete outfit is on one hanger. A curtain behind the couch conceals the hangers and moves the clothing back when the bed is lowered, so it is not over our heads. We used grommet drapes on a tension rod. We do have enough good storage space for everything, except maybe a toaster oven, but now working on that.
