Day 32 - Sat Aug 28 2010
Another foggy, cool morning -- hi's in the 60's again!!!
Rolling by 9:30AM. We stopped in Arcata and walked through the Saturday Farmer's Market. Arcata is quite the interesting university town -- lots of organic foods, and interesting people. We carried on South on US101 to The Avenue of the Giants scenic drive through the Redwoods National Forest. Huge trees, gigantic and very close to the two-lane road. We stopped at the Shrine of the Drive Thru Tree -- cheesy, but cool. We got in free (we were walking, no way could we pull the trailer through there) because we spent money in the little tiny gift shop. We carried on South on US101 until the split to get on US1 on the coast again. Quite the road, lots of twists and turns and ups and downs, 10mph on the curves, 15mph on the curves and you better stay in your own lane. We continued South to Albion to the Albion River Campground down by the river and under the historic Albion bridge. We were told by a girl in the office to just go set up and pay in the morning. Great.
DAY 33 - Sun Aug 29 2010
Cool but sunny morning. Hubby went to the office to pay -- $30 for full hookup with cable. The showers cost money and left alot to be desired, so we didn't use them. Packed up and rolling by 10:30AM. We headed back North to get back nearer to Mendocino. We stopped there for lunch on the second floor of an historic building. You had to actually walk up the stairs in the water tower next door to enter the restaurant. We ate out on the 'porch' outside facing the water. Very beautiful, a little pricey, but well worth it. The food was good and the drinks were cold.
We were looking for a campground for a couple of nights, and we talked to a local guy who told us about Caspar Beach RV Park -- right on the water and a very nice place -- full hookup, wifi, cable, pay showers but oh so clean. We checked in, set up, then took a drive to Fort Bragg for supplies. Back to the trailer to do laundry, walk on the beach, and cook dinner. We had pork cutlets with mozzarella and the leftover spaghetti sauce. Very good.
We waited for the sunset, and took a short drive to Point Cabrillo lighthouse -- the smallest lighthouse we'd every seen. You can actually stay in one of three lightkeeper's houses on the Point. These are very beautiful original homes and the sunset was awesome.
DAY 34 - Mon Aug 30 2010
Cool, but sunny again -- hi's in the mid 60's again today. We took a ride to Fort Bragg to check out the shops and Glass Beach. The shops were nice, some antique, some thrift. We had lunch at a little Chinese place downtown, Lee's, and it was very good. We took a short drive over to Glass Beach. The beach got its name because during the 1920's through the 1940's, people used this beach as a dump. It was finally cleaned up in the 1960's, but the ocean keeps churning up tiny bits of glass. The glass is very small, and of course very smooth from the washing of the ocean. It wasn't quite as spectacular as I imagined it would be. You're not supposed to pick the glass and take it home, but we saw several people doing just that.
We stopped to pick up groceries, and had chicken wings that we cooked in the oven in the trailer. Very good.
DAY 35 - Tue Aug 31 2010
Cool, misty morning. Packed and rolling by 9:30AM. We're heading East today. We started out on US20 to Willits, which is only 33 miles, but that must be 'as the crow flies' because the road is crazy through the mountains and trees. We turned South at Willits - still on US20 - to Clear Lake, then east again to Colusa. There we turned North to Chico. We have friends there. We stopped to get gas at 3PM, and arrived at our friends by 3:30PM. Our friend met us on the front lawn. When his wife got home from school -- she's a teacher at college -- we barbequed steaks, potatoes, corn on the cob and salad for dinner. Hubby went for a swim in the beautiful pool before dinner. They convinced us to stay in their spare room while we are here. We agreed. Early to bed.
DAY 36 - Wed Sep 1 2010
Another bright, sunny morning. After coffee, we piled into our friend's 'rag-top' Mustang and took a tour around Chico. We stopped at a couple of thrift stores, then lunch at "Madison Bear Garden" near the university. Back at the house, we went for a swim, then barbequed ribs for dinner.
A very good day, and another early night.
