DAY37 - Thu Sep 2 2010
Another bright, sunny morning with hi's in the 90's again today. We sat around the house by the pool, and then went for a hair trim in the afternoon. Later, we went out for dinner to the Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. -- nice place, good service, good food, and best of all great company. We got back to our friends' place and called it an early night.
DAY 38 - Fri Sep 3 2010
Another bright sunny California morning, but we had to say our goodbyes. We were rolling by 9AM. We stopped at an orchard on our way East on HWY20 -- Tony's Fruit Stand and bought a whole box of fruits and nuts. Our Uncle Ray would be proud.
Spotted an Airstream about 1:30PM, at the Nevada/California State line. They were a newer model with dark covers on the front windows, travelling east on I-80.
We drove throught Donner's Pass, and the the I-80 is VERY BAD as you're leaving California and entering Nevada. Terrible road -- hard on the tires, tough on the nerves.
We drove through Reno, after stopping for gas, on to find the Burning Man party.
We spotted another Airstream just east of Sparks on I-80 travelling west. They were an older model, possibly an Argosy.
Another Airstream spotted going southbound Hwy 447, away from the Burning Man as we were getting closer. They were a newer model, and though we blinked and waved, they did not.
Yet another Airstream spotted as we finally reached Burning Man, well, the way in anyway. They were a 1968 Globetrotter 19foot, leaving Burning Man. We both blinked and waved through the torrential dust storm. The extravaganza was being held out in the desert, of course, and the wind was wild and the sand was blowing!!!! People were wearing goggles and masks the dust was so bad. Once we found out the ridiculous price they wanted for us to stay for 2 days, we turned our rig around and headed back out the way we came, through the sand and the dust and the blowing sand, and the sand back towards Reno. We were disappointed, but as we were driving south on Hwy 447, we spotted the vintage Airstream we had seen earlier parked at an ndian Taco stand at the side of the road. We stopped, and had tacos with them, and they told us all about Burning Man. The tacos were delicious -- made with Indian fry bread, beans, lettuce, tomatoes.
We said goodbye, and followed them to Sparks where we turned off. We found Sparks Marina RV Park, the newest park in the area, and got a spot. They were a little pricey, $52 a night, but they had everything, and the showers were awesome. We booked for 2 nights.
That is the first rv park ever that we've stayed in that has had artificial turf at each site!!! Different, but beautiful.
DAY 39 - Sat Sep 4
Cool, but sunny morning with hi's in the 90's once again.
We took a drive to see Reno, and then back to the trailer for some lunch. After lunch, we took a drive to Reno again and checked out Virginia Ave -- lots of interesting antique shops and we found a few treasures. Can't say what, let's just say treasures. We stopped at a biker bar that was having a 'do' for a drink, then back to the trailer for a swim and hot tub. We decided to check out the rib cookoff in Sparks, and were surprised to see so many people there. Unbelievable. We didn't get ribs, because the lines were way too long. We sampled some deep fried veggies, and a drink, and then back to the trailer.
DAY 40 - Sun Sep 5
Another beautiful, sunny morning. We discovered that the gaucho couch took a bad bump on a cattle crossing on Hwy 447, on the way back from the BM fiasco the other day. We can fix it and will do it later. We were packed and off to the car wash to wash the trailer by 10:30AM. On our way to the I-80, we stopped at a vintage car show at the Marina Beach in Sparks. There were some great beauties there and wish we had the coin for one of the ones for sale. We were back on the I-80 by noon.
We spotted a newer, little Airstream on the I-80, just east of Sparks. They were travelling west.
Shortly after, we spotted another Airstream!! This one, vintage, shiny but very dusty -- heading west.
We stopped in Lovelock NV to "Lock Our Love". It's an ancient Chinese tradition that lLvelock has adopted. You and your loved one take a lock to a place behind the courthouse in Lovelock. You lock your lock on one of the 'never-ending chains' there, and throw the key away. This symbolizes that your love is locked forever. We had a boy there take our pictures and gave him $2 for his trouble and to share with his friends there. They thought it was funny that we came from Canada to lock our love. We bought our lock at the Safeway across the street -- the only place open on Sunday. The girls working there thought we were funny.
The courthouse in Lovelock is round, and the only one in the country still operating as a courthouse. Very pretty little place.
Another Airstream spotted travelling west on I-80 just east of Winnemucca NV. This was a vintage Airstream Motorhome -- shiny and beautiful.
We stopped in Elko at the Double Dice RV Park, and were told that they were full, and to try the one at Exit 314. We did, and we found Elko RV Park -- $26 night, full hookup with wifi (in the trailer), but no cable. We got 2 channels. Bacon and eggs, and white corn from California for dinner. Very good.
Early night.
