Monday, 12/1 we pulled down to the Okefenokee Swamp, GA.
Another short run of about 180 miles.

Arrived about 3 pm... found a great little campsite....
meant for tent campers but I squeezed in the Bambi
for a very cozy fit ! :D

This is my favorite campsite of the whole trip this far. <img src="http://www.airforums.com/forums/blog_attachment.php?attachmentid=126&thumb=1&d=1228395356" class="thumbnail" border="0" alt="Click image for larger version

What a great place!
The bathrooms are great, warm and the showers clean and wonderful
Full hookups, again with cable TV (11 channels) and a laundry.
Walked around the camp a bit... saw 5 deer on the way in.
The swamp is right behind our campsite.
Very quite and cozy at night.
A million stars all around. No road noise.

Tuesday, 12/2
Got up around our 7 am norm...
had some leisurely coffee and showers.
Walked all the trails in the park... about 3 miles.
Then put in the canoe and did about 3 1/2 hours
out to Minnie Lake and back.
Saw several Great White Egrets and 3 alligators.
Donna was intimidated at first...
the first snapper was about a 9 footer.
Had lunch out at the rest station at Minnie Lake.
The paddle up the river was very cool.
The only bummer was 3 jon boats of locals buzzing by
as fast as possible with outboard motors on the way back.
I think all motors should be banned from this special place.
Time to switch over to electric motors for the rentals, etc.
I'm used to the Boundary Waters of Northern Minnesota...
no motors allowed period.. on all inner lakes
(except on the huge boundary lakes which border Canada.
[also no overhead air traffic]
The pollution in the swamp (a National Wildlife Refuge)...
and the disturbance to the wildlife and other boaters is un-necessary.
It was a great day and full.
The best place so far.
and it was a last minute decision to come here....
out of the way, but so very worth it for that very reason!

Tomorrow, Wednesday, 12/3 we leave for St. Augustine, FL.

Friday, 11/28 we pulled down to Savannah, GA.
Another short run of about 140 miles.
Got in early, set up camp and drove out to Tybee Island.
It began to rain and got dreary.
No chance to walk on the beach.
Stopped at the 'Crab House' on the way back,
hidden back in the boonies, at the end of the causeway onto the island.
What a neat local joint!. Alligator pond.
Mounds of seafood platters...
Crabs, oysters, fish, lobster, etc.
Meant to go back back when we were in a hungry mood,
but never got the chance... it rained all weekend.

Saturday, 11/29
Visited some of Donna's relatives,
then drove into town and all around the historic neighborhoods...
houses, parks, statues, etc.
Went down the the riverfront... Bay street and River Street.
It was mobbed with people.... tons of restaurants and bars, etc.
Couldn't even find a parking place!
Had enough and drove back to camp.

Sunday, 11/30
It rained solid all day.
Spent a day in camp reading.
I felt pukey... saw a lot of the bathroom.

Left on Monday, 12/1
for the heart of the Okefenokee Swamp!

Sunday, 11/23 was Bunnie's Birthday!
We pulled out of Myrtle Beach
(after doing the short trail hike through the park)...
made the short drive down the coast to Charleston.
Stopped at the Hampton Plantation along the way.
An amazing piece of history with a tour for $4 !
Built around 1625, George Washington was a guest in 1671.
He advised them not to cut down the oak in the front yard,
which blocked a clear view of the house... it's still there!
Edgar Allen Poe and others were also guests.
The house is not 'restored'... but is still amazing.

Swung around Charleston on the 526...
then North up Hwy 26 to Summerville,
found Givhans Ferry State Park.
Nice park... hookups and hot showers.... mmmmmm :)

Monday, 11/24 we went into Charleston and walked around.
Got hooked into listening to a schpeal from 'Vacation Station'
in exchange for tickets to the Magnolia Plantation,
Carriage Tour and $25 credit for lunch at a restaurant.
I guess it was worth the 1 1/2 hours of our precious time.
Cashed our $25 check immediately
and went and ate at the Griffon... cute English pub.
Good beer and crab cakes... :)
Drove back to camp in the dark.

Tuesday, 11/25 went and saw the Magnolia Plantation.
Our 'all inclusive' tickets were not! (surprise!).
They were basic admission to the grounds and gardens only.
We paid extra for the house tour, skipped the tram tour,
boat tour and the Audubon Swamp Garden. Dangit.
The house was truly amazing.
Built in 1680 and still in the same family!
Gorgeous furnishings. Amazing history.
The gardens were extensive... walked throughout.
Went through a cute petting zoo before we left.

Wednesday, 11/26 we took a short canoe trip down the Edisto River
(the longest free-flowing black-water river on the continent!
The park ranger was kind enough to spot us about 7 miles upriver for free!
along with my trusty old Mad River Explorer canoe.
Had a nice float down... but lots of houses/cabins along the way.

Thursday, 11/27 Thanksgiving...
Spent the day in camp.
Took a little hike around the camp nature trail.
Donna made Thanksgiving dinner from a Bob Evans pre-cooked Turkey & gravy meal.
Nice tasty turkey, good gravy!... :)
No bones, skin, knuckles, tendons, sinew, fat, etc. ... yum :)
She made real potatoes, had corn & cranberries
and cute little single-serving pies like pot pies :)
Perfect! :) Much thanks for all our gifts and blessings.

Friday, 11/28 we headed out for Savannah.

We hitched up and pulled up thru New Bern again,
before turning South on Hwy 17.
We made a 'quick stop' just outside New Bern,
into a McDonalds... to get a quick breakfast burrito and orange juice.
(blushing as I admit to this weakness).
As I pulled forward from the ordering window,
I heard this God-awful scraping sound from the roof!
Yes, like many a newbie (I bet)....
I had hit the overhang metal awning!
Ripped the side off my air conditioner shroud!
Dang it! This was quickly turning into bad, bad morning!
After haggling with the manager, filing a report and taking pictures,
we moved on... about an hour wasted.
Luckily, I don't think I damaged any of the internal organs.
Lesson learned: one of three...
1) Never stop at fast food! You're 'camping' you dolt!
2) Never drive thru a drive-thru with a trailer!
3) Always take close note of overhangs!
The awning DID have it's height printed on its edge.
9' 0"... I didn't see it. It was about 2" tall !

Drove down thru Jacksonville, Camp Lejune,
thru Wilmington, into South Carolina,
onto business 17 thru North Myrtle Beach
and the Grand Strand of tourist development!
Arrived at Myrtle Beach State Park, just 3 miles South of downtown Myrtle Beach...
and the most expensive camping we've done so far.

Called our Airstream Dealer in Grand Rapids, MI
Woodland RV...
they were very helpful.
Service assured us that the air conditioner would not leak water
into the interior even with the shroud shredded!
We ordered a new shroud direct from the manufacturer (Dometic)
and had it FedExed to meet us at Donna's sisters place near Orlando.
More on that when we to the install.
Total cost $108 with shipping! (At least twice as much from Airstream!)

Saturday, 11/22
Drove down the road to Huntington State Park,
Toured through the ruins of 'Atalaya'
winter home of ... Huntington and wife Anna Hyatt Huntington, sculptor.
Interesting place.
She sculpted mostly animals and always from live models.
She kept a menagerie of critters for subjects,
including monkeys, horses, bear, etc.
which she returned to the wild after she finished with them.
They traveled to their winter home each year from New York
pulling a 30' custom-made travel trailer, ...( in the 30's!)
in which they lived with their pet monkey and Macaw!
He wrote the (still) definitive translation of 'El Cid'.
Not a dummy... just very, very rich.

Drove down to Pawley's Island,
then back up through Murrell's Inlet,
stopped for a drink at a waterfront oyster bar.
Made astop out at the local 'Camping World' store.
Had my hitch ball tightened for $10.
(which I could have probably done myself).
Can't imagine would the dang thing came loose!
The lock washer wasn't even compressed!

Sunday, on our way out, we walked the trail in the park.
It was very nice.... original maritime forest.
The best part of our stay at Myrtle Beach!

Wed. 11/19 we hitched up and pulled out onto Hatteras Island again...
turned South thru Cape Hatteras and on to Ocracoke Island...
saw the famous lighthouses.
Very built up touristy, high-dollar coastal dunes living.
The development seems fairly out of control.
Stopped on Ocracoke Island (after a short and free ferry ride)
and inquired about where to see the famous wild horses.
We were informed... 'oh that's a misunderstanding...
the horses are only in a pen now'.
..... what??!!!! .... pass.
They must still exist on some other island!
I'm sure I've read about them somewhere!

At the end of Ocracoke Island...
we boarded another NC State ferry for a 2 1/2 hour ride
back the the mainland at Cedar Island...
across Pamlico Sound.... the biggest inland body of water in the world !
Is it 'inland' because it's surrounded by the barrier islands?
Hardly seems fair... :) ... It's a huge sound for sure....
Tons of sea birds on the small sand islands...
Saw dolphins breaching across the bow of the ferry.
Bunny's favorite sight so far!... :)

Drove down thru Morehead City,
stopped and had a GREAT dinner at 'Piccata's' restaurant.
Then up Hwy 70 to Neuse River Nat'l Forest Campground
in the Croatan National Forest
($8.50/nite w/ elec. & hot showers!... )
[but haul your own well water].

Day 9, 11/20
Saw the biggest Preying Mantis I've ever seen
right outside the forest service office door.
I nearly stepped on it!
It was nearly six inches long!
"Honest.... 'this' is six inches"... :)
We drove up to New Bern... it was torn up with much construction on the bridges.
Did some shopping and bought our first propane.
$25 to fill a 30# tank... I think it might not have been totally empty...
Didn't get a reading on how many gallons went in.
Burning the heater nearly every night.... close to freezing.

Arrived in the dark, after long day driving across NC
(the WIDEST state East of the Mississippi).
Finally found the state park in the dark,
pulled into a tight space... pitch black.
Surrounded by swamp...
on the edge of the East Dismal Swamp.
Bunny was a bit scared.
No hook-ups. cold.
Semi-OK bathrooms, not heated,
cold and damp... did not shower here.

Tues., 11/18 we day-toured...
drove to the Outer Banks...
over several causeways and bridges.
Visited Roanoke Island... museum of the 'Lost Colony'...
'Croatoan'... very interesting.
Then on to Nags Head... very 'built up'...
turned North up to Kitty Hawk and the Wright Bros. Nat'l Monument.
Then south along the coast on Hwy 264
detoured to 'Stumpy Point'....
an interesting glimpse into rural coastal life...
down to Lake Mattamuskeet... turned north on Hwy 94
visited the Nat'l Widlife Refuge of the same name...
lots of birds... :)
Back to camp around dusk.

The further along we get with the remodel the more ideas we have. One that emerged recently was Paint. The walls were so dirty and dingy, sticky and yucky, drab and bland we wanted to spice her up a bit.

First I went to Lowe's and Home Depot to look for the perfect product to paint the vinyl clad walls and quickly found I was not at all comfortable with the answers I received about what products I should use. I wanted to know for a fact that the product I used would adhere to the vinyl and would not chip or peal. I read a post on airforums.com from someone that was a painter and suggested BM paint so I went to my local dealer. The people at Benjamin Moore really know what they are talking about and what questions to ask ME about MY project.

YUCK and EUU

Prep:
I scrubbed the walls several times with different products and nothing really did it. I applied TSP which is a No-Rinse, one-step concentrated cleaner and deglosser for prepaint surface preparation. I used a spray bottle and a scratchy scrubber to get into the texture of the walls then wiped with old towels. TSP removes grease, grime, mildew stains, food stains, crayon, dirt and smoke from painted or unpainted wood, metal or vinyl wallpaper. Will not harm aluminum.

WORKED LIKE A CHARM! NICE AND CLEAN!
I then applied Benjamin Moore's GRIP and SEAL primer. I cut in first around windows and wall panels then blew through the rest with a roller.

TINTED PRIMER

It finally warmed up enough for me to paint the top coat. It is WILD!
The color is called “Salsa” from Benjamin Moore it’s their "Aura" with Color Lock. It has low VOC and has virtually NO Fumes. I never once noticed the fumes while applying the primer or top coat. The low VOC paint from Benjamin Moore offers over 140 wonderful colors that all go together, no matter what colors you choose they are the will complement each other. The point being you can't go wrong with this paint! I LOVE IT.

This pictures is the most true to color of the pictures. It kind of looks like leather with the texture in the vinyl.
(click on pic. to see texture)
Jack is from the island of Samoa so we will decorate in a Polynesian Theme. We have a lot of things from the islands to decorate with. Makes sense to me!

We are very excited to be this far along although we have a long way to go. Hopefully we will be finished by spring for the 1st spring rally. That would be awesome!

No matter what stage our AS is in we us it, we go camping, we go to rallies. Our 1st rally we used a mattress from our guest room on the floor. No water/plumbing, toilet, no air conditioner, no stove, just a cabinet Jack had made and installed right before we left.

Each rally we've had a little more progress to show, a little more knowledge to share and a little more joy in our hearts.

We have started our restoration (we are doing our best). So far we have removed the bathroom floor. The back 2 ft section. We removed the household toilet that the PO installed. We removed the tub and sink (to make repairs and paint). Getting the univolt out was a very tricky job as was removing the water heater. I think we will update both. We also need to get a battery, there was none in it.

here is how My husband got the univolt out using our camera to zoom in, so he could find the screws bolting it down.

when we took out the water heater we had to cut the bottom of the cabinet off equal with how it was on the side of the toilet encloser.

here is the bondo repair to fiberglass tub I did, we will be painting with tough as tile.

and we are repairing sink with epoxy it had/has a large crack on both sides of drain.

We said goodbye to Doug and headed South to the Smokies. Pulled another 330 miles or so... took about 7 hours after a couple unfortunate wrong turns. Made me wish we had a GPS unit.
Took a wrong exit in Knoxville and ended up having to drive straight through downtown! That added 45 mins or so to the days drive. Then, I meant to take the short Gatlinburg bypass (to avoid the town craziness), but instead went west to Wear Valley then south on a small road into the park. I had been there before... (but forgot how steep the climb was into the park on this road! [it is not officially marked as a park entrance] Thankfully it was short but at times only 15 mph and scary!... :)
The Smokies were cold and rainy. the second night was too cold and miserable to even have a camp fire. We spent Saturday driving the Roaring Fork Motor trail... stopped at an interesting antique store just before the end. They had cabins for rent and had been generations in that valley... making honey! Then we drove around Cades Cove Loop. Never saw so many people stopped to gawk at plain old deer!... :) It was excruciatingly slow. Glad to get back to camp. I had already decided NOT to haul up and over the Newfound Gap road as there was frost with snow coming. The next day I found it had been closed the night before. Snow line was at 4000' and the mountains were frosted and beautiful. We left on Sunday and pulled out to Townsend and around to the West on the Foothills Parkway, then over Hwy 129 and 28 to Fontana Lake. I never drove a steeper, more winding road in my life! Some grades were 12º !... many were 8 or 9º... Yikes. Much of the trip was at 15 to 20 mph! Hairpin turns, no guard rails, etc. just not used to mountain driving lately!. We drove 180 miles in a whole day that took 7 hours! We ended up south of Asheville at the Davidson River Campground in the Pisgah National Forest. Not a bad camp, it was $15 with full hookups. We only stayed one night... heater on again... then headed West for Cape Hatteras.... seeking warmer weather.
