Still in Michigan.

Planned on leaving on Nov. 1
Plans postponed for family gathering on the 7th.
Dropped the Bambi off the jack stands while re-packing the wheel bearings! Into the dealer for repairs.
On hold until completed, hopefully around Nov. 15th.

Intended trip: Start Mammoth cave, then to Nashville and onto the Natchez Trace Parkway. Down to Natchez, MS, perhaps visit New Orleans for Thanksgiving. Across US 10 and down the Texas gulf coast. Galveston, Corpus Christi, Brownsville, up to Big Bend around Christmas. New Mexico, White Sands... mostly camping in National Forests. Arizona... close to the border... Organ Pipe Nat'l Monument, Quartzite... very loose itinerary. San Diego, Salton Sea, Joshua Tree, Death Valley. Return through Grand Canyon, Canyonlands, Zion, Arches, etc. Route 66? Trying to stay far south until the spring and warmer temps for Utah, etc.
Any suggestions appreciated!
More to come.

Finally buffed and installed the last of the interior panels that I am going to remove vinyl from. Decided to do just the front endcap section for now. Also installed the newly painted front screen and window trim sections.

The PO (neighbor) showed up the the original electric jack. He removed it when he parked the trailer 25 years ago. After pulling pulling the motor apart and cleaning it up, it worked !!! Going to need a new rocker switch as it only works in one direction. Don't have the plastic housing the covers the motor housing. Hopefully can located one.

Completed by Fantastic Vent hybrid installation. Took a new AS main light cover and rotated in 90 degrees. Extended the switch and fuse through the plastic. Then cut a couple of the plastic grille sections so you can access the open/close knob. Obviously would have been cleaner installing an automatic open/closing unit, but am trying to save a few $$$.

We sealed the shower walls with a PVC textured shower board from a box store and 100% silicone sealer. Here are a couple of shots before the hall wall went on:

We sealed the shower walls with a PVC textured shower board from a box store and 100% silicone sealer. Here are a couple of shots before the hall wall went on:

We put a coat of polyurethane on the walls before mounting them, then put 2 more coats while in place. Here are the finished shots:

From the rear bedroom looking looking toward the bathroom (the framing of the bedroom wall lines up with mounting of the bath cabinets and will hide mostly below the bed):

We still need to make the cabinet and bathroom doors, the mirror back on over the window (after some trim is put on it), find the loop piece for the shower sprayer hose holdback bracket thing and get a toilet, oh and flooring. I will probably wait on making cabinet doors and do them all at once. I haven't decided yet but I may add some wood trim where the screw heads show on the sink to give it a more finished look but not sure if it is needed.

We also finished polyurethaning and inserting the new pine panels into the fridge. I took the orange Dometic stickers that were in the trim off since they were peeling and... orange and replaced them with 2 strips of pine paneling.

It is getting cold here and vacation from work is mostly used up so won't be much progress again until spring unless winter turns out warm in VA.

I'm not sure how others just removed the bottom panels. Mine seem to be layered/overlapped with the top panels by at least a foot (kind of a waste!). And then those are underneath the top/ceiling panels. I can kind of bend them - but can't get to the rivets behind them...So I'm going with the real complete gut and removing all - including the ceiling. And now I've been inspired by some pretty cool renovations I've seen on-line...! Here are some panel pics for your enjoyment - though they probably don't highlight the challenge...

In these pictures you can see the kitchen is gutted - and a picture of the old heater that was disconnected awhile ago. Not sure if it works - or ever worked - but some more critters made good use of it's interior! I unscrewed the vent from the outside and with the gap started leaking water on the interior - highlighting the importance of those seems! ...here's my dog Cinque ("Chinkway") who didn't want to hang outside during the rain....!

Eric just walked by and looked at my avatar picture and figures you all are thinking I am the chick in the middle, nope. I am in the foreground.

This seems sort of lame to just go on and on about myself. So, I will write more when something cool happens.
This week we worked on re-making the bathroom. I started with the wall between the shower and kitchen since one side is hidden with shower board and the other will have another wall in front of it covering vent PVC pipes. I wasn't worried about grain direction or the handling of the round corner for this wall since it wouldn't be seen but did want to practice making good, solid tongue and groove framing with floating panels of pine paneling and make a sturdy mounting area around the curved wall for the shower board. The paneled walls are a little lighter in weight than the thicker, honeycomb walls AS used inside our camper, but a little heavier than the straight panelling walls. Here is a picture of the first wall just sitting in position before sanding and polyurethane:

Next was the wall on the other side of the shower where the opening into the shower is. Here is a picture of it clamped up for drying (and my messy shop):

You can't see the right half of the shop. It is chock full of the old interior as well as some of our yard out in front of the shop.

Here is that wall just sitting in place after getting the curve to fit:

The hole at the bottom is for the heater vent. We are reusing the brown one that was in there but mounting is on the back of the board for a recessed vent.

That is all of the pictures we have so far but we did finish making the wall between the bath and bedroom as well as both hall walls that go in front of the shower and toilet and make the opening into the bathroom. They have been finish sanded and the shower board cut for both side walls. I will say, the square walls went together fast. The rounded walls went back and forth to the shop 4-5 times to get the curve shape just right. That is even after using the walls that came out as templates and making sure they fit back in before hand.

I kept debating on whether to polyurethane the walls before putting them in for the shower area since I knew I would beat them around getting them in and the shower board installed so decided to mount the 2 side walls on the tub first. Next week I will polyurethane those 2 walls in place and mount the shower board, the other 3 bathroom walls and hopefully make the cabinet for under the sink and get the bathroom finished off.

Was able to install my new Fantastic Fan as well as the new polycarbonate skylight to replace the rotted one at the midship opening. I used the existing flat bars that the original double hulled skylight was riveted to. It lays right on them and then I mixed a good batch of JB Weld and glued it to it. I have found that paint mixing sticks work well when spreading and working Vulkem around roof penetrations.

Plan on installing a remote switch in the original style light cover for the Fantastic Fan and extending the open/close handle down through it as well.

Got the front window trim pieces painted and ready for install.

Great, most of you already know what crappy writing skills I have. Now hopefully they will have a greater audience! This wee box better have spell check.

So, since I don't have an Airstream to brag about yet, I will just talk about myself.

I go to school, I know I am old but I never got the chance to go before.

I want to go to Cal.

I live with my boyfriend/fiance. We have a cat named Archimedes (yes there is spell check, sweet). He was recently lost for 28 miserable (for us) days. He was locked in a neighbors basement... and to make a long story short he is back and has put all his weight back on. Man I love that cat! We call him Meech, that rhymes with peach. But my best friend Mary calls him Mitch.

Eric is from the area around Vallejo and I am from San Francisco. We met at a BART station. Sighs, such a nice memory.

I love reading the threads and am handy enough that I bet I could do a non-stock restoration to an older girl wanting a new look. I would let Eric help.

So, drilling out rivets is actually really simple. What I've learned is that its easier to just let the drill to the work versus pushing hard thinking you need to "get that rivet". Let the drill to the work. Once in a while the rivet will spin (i.e. it's loose) and you simply have to angle the drill to catch an edge of the rivet.

One annoying thing is that the tops of the rivets end up collecting on the drill bit (anyone have any ideas on this?). See left picture. To get them off, I put the drill on the edge of some wood in reverse and guide them off. See right picture.

Firing up the electrical system

With the Globie sitting in the driveway and the Por15 drying, something compelled me to see what happened when I connected the Airstream to the house with the big black cord. I had had the battery and connections to the tow vehicle replaced, and the battery powered the lights and fans, but I was curious about the Univolt and the whole line voltage system. I got a fire extinguisher close by, opened up the connection on the back of the trailer, and connected the cable. I plugged in the other end, and went back to the trailer to smell for smoke. I sat down on top of the john, opened the cabinet, flipped the circuit breakers and the Univolt started humming. Nothing weird.. yet. I went back to the compartment and switched it to 120v, everything o.k. so far. All the lights worked, and the outlets, so I plugged in the boombox, put in a cd and sat down with a glass of wine. So, with the exception of a few burned out bulbs the electrical system functions, and one big thing is crossed off the list. Relief.

And of course, there was the token left overs from years of mouse and rat parties under the refrigerator (I think this is where the teenagers
hung out).
