64 GT Restoration #13 (DEXTER AXLE is the best)

Posted 01-29-2009 at 08:14 PM by 64TrotterAtl

So, the past few weeks have been interesting. I have basically completed the interior skin re-instal. I was able to luckily purchase some zolatone and primer from a new friend here in Atlanta for a reat price. I have decided to o with the Apollo Grey, exactly what was originally in it. What have I accomplished other than getting the zolatone, well......I welded a new 2 5/16 tongue on the frame, welded a 2 inch hitch receiver for my bike rack on the back bumper, and welded the LP gas tank holder onto the frame. I purchase (4) 24 inch scissor jacks to be welded to the frame on all 4 corners and also purchased the very expensive weight distribution hitch with sway bar and the other two bars with chains on them, can't remember the name of them. I guess I must say that the best thing of all is my experience with DEXTER AXLE COMPANY. So when I originally purchased the torsion axle, I was ignorant of the 45 degree down angle, the high profile brackets etc. So I assumed that the representative that Dexter had on their website in my area would give me all options needed to acheive my goal of excellent ground clearance. NOPE!!!! The axle was easy to install with correct measurements, but it only allowed less than 6 inches ground clearance from the bottom of my rey tank pan. This was definitely not going to work since I want to be able to take this thing to far away places in remote areas. So I decided to call Dexter myself and explain that I felt their product was misrepresented in my case. I had a great torsion axle that was useless, I did not get the product I needed to get the job done. I was unaware of the options previously mentioned until I did some more research. So they listened to me and made it right. They agreed and sent me a new torsion spindle with 45 degrees down torsion arms as well as a 3 inch tall brackets. All at no cost to me. I should receive the axle on Monday and all I will need to do is mount and take the hubs off the other axle and put on the new axle. I will then have 21 inches clearance from the bottom of my frame to the ground unloaded, loaded will bring the clearance to 19.2 inches. Needless to say, Dexter Axle Co. has made a customer for life and I would be glad to help any others out there that have read stories on the forums that scare you from Dexter to Henschen. It literally took me 1.5 hours to install my axle, by myself. As you can see, their customer service is what we would all expect from American companies, thank goodness, THANKS DEXTER AXLE COMPANY, Connie and Rick specifically. I will post pics again of my axle replacement, this time including the hub change from old axle to new axle.

So if we were to order dexters am I correct in saying we must specify a 45degree down angle and they we need high porfile brackets? I also read here on the forums that you must ask for reverse mounting brackets, is that how you ordered them? We are getting ready to order and need to know what we need.

I am not sure if you need to order reverse mounting brackets. If I were you, I would call Dexter and ask them to run the computer program ProSpec, which will give you alot of useful information such as ground clearance, tire to wheel well height, center of spindle to round height. It all depends on what you want, I wanted alot of ground clearance for boon-docking in the middle of the woods. Ask for Connie and she will point you in the right direction. I think I spoke with Christine who is the design engineer.
