Why did I buy an Airstream

Posted 06-23-2011 at 05:54 AM by Mr & Mrs S

Anyone that has followed my thread knows that we bought an Airstream and made one camping trip in it and found out we had many problems. The more we dug and opened "the can of worms" the more worms/problems we found.
It took me just over a year to get it fix so that it could be used again. I worked hard between my personal life and my career to find time to work on ''Tha Stream" as we call it.
Other than this forum and my wife I didn’t have any help during our rebuild. I often received criticism for attempting what most said was impossible or that I’d give up right in the middle and how much money I was throwing away at a nearly twenty year old trailer. They would ask why I didn’t buy this or proceed to let me know how great there SOB was. I simply smiled and said were all different and we all have our reasons. REASONS? You have a reason for going through all this trouble?
Yes I do . And this is it.
I am a man. I work with my hands for a living. I am proud of the things that I can accomplish with my own two hands and the will power to make a dream become a reality. Mrs. S and I have always talked about owning an Airstream. We would be driving along and see one pass by and the next hour or so we would talk about what we would do or where we would go if we had one. Mrs. S. loves to travel. I love to camp. And we both loved Airstreams.
So we purchased our very first Airstream. I’ve worked many hours to try and get her ready for a dream we both have. To be able to travel freely and go whichever way we desire. To wake up in the morning and drink coffee and look at the mountains or the beach. Just the two of us. A way to break the everyday routine. A way to get away from the news and all the bad things that are wrong in our world today. We are in search for the things that make our country grand. To meet other people with the common interest of being free. Life can become so routine. Wake up, Work, go home, sleep, do it again the next day. But with an Airstream you have some freedom to wake up wherever you please. And that is what kept me going. We have only taken one trip in our Airstream since its repairs. When I hooked her up to our new TV and pulled her down the drive way and came to the main highway, I looked left and I looked right, I was so proud to know that I could go in either direction and all the things that mattered most were all in a line, and no matter which way I turned we were free.
Our dream was finally a reality.
We only live one life, why be bound to the daily grind and never take a chance on what you wish you could do.
I took a chance, and I’m moving forward, the only time I look back is to see my Airstream in my rearview mirror and smile because we are on our way to make our dreams come true.
So why did you buy your Airstream?
We all have a reason.
Just thought I’d share mine with you.
Safe travels to you all, hope to cross paths with you all soon.

Great reasons! We share many thoughts. I hope we meet sooner rather than later!

As we used to say back in the day, "right on brother!" I like your attitude.

I can barely put it better. We are anxious to get on the road for the same reasons, but are waiting for some one to come along and buy our house. We are very tired of mortgage payments, insurance payments, water bills, mowing the lawn, property taxes, etc. etc. and see the Airstream as a way of cutting our expenses so much we can retire and have more quality time to do what we love: travel.

Well put! We purchased ours almost 3 years ago after having many sob's and thought it would be fun to have and restore a vintage trailer. As I was searching and reading the thought of an airstream came up as I work with sheet metal for a living and a aluminum trailer was a good match. In not to much time our 54 Cruiser(Nellie) showed herself on craigslist. If I would have known it was going to be 3plus years before camping in her??? Don't know what else I would have done with all that spare time anyway. Already we have met many good friends. Our favorite trips are the ones with no plans, just going till we want to stop.We are very much looking forward to getting on the road with Nellie.
