Custom Made Awning Update

Posted 08-02-2008 at 11:42 PM by codybear
Hi, We just returned from the Coast. Weather was beautiful with the usual afternoon fog creeping over the ocean and inland. After the usual setup at our site, we got all the accessories that went along with the awning. We set up the awning which went up quite quickly and it worked!..Over the next 2 days, we played with the poles and stakes, adjusting and readjusting them so that they'd all fit together. We also tried making the poles taller, and also moved the poles to the inside set of grommets at the 8' length to see how that would work if we wanted a shortened version. We also were ready to take the awning down if by chance some inclement weather might come our way..We did have some winds that kicked up about 25-35 mph during the late afternoons..I started thinking maybe we'd better take the awning down before night. Steve said let's see what happens. I was thinking that when we got back home, I'd go get a couple more poles, add some more grommets and guy lines to stabilize the awning in case it would come loose from the track on the side of the safari..we crossed our fingers and went to bed, hoping the awning would still be standing and just waving around like a happy flag in the morning .it did hold up..so as for now, no adjustments..Here's some pix.

I recently had a vintage style awning and fabric awnings to match my road side zip dees made. Affordable and we love the way they look. This is a nice way to vintage-ize a newer trailer too.

Your awning looks terrific! Isn't it great to sit under, an elf under a mushroom sort of feeling. Do err on the side of caution with wind, however. Max and I were camping in Idaho a few years ago, beautiful day--warm, balmy--when a sudden wind blew up and before we could get our wits together enough to take action, our awning whipped out of the fasteners to the ground, up in the air, and poles and all flew OVER our trailer. Luckily no damage, except to our nerves! Enjoy and take care ~G
