Southern Saskatchewan Trip June 2009 - 5 Eastend

After we left Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park, we headed east toward the center of the province. This was our hottest day -- 100F. The Jeep fortunately didn't overheat. We stopped briefly at Eastend, the home of Scotty the T-Rex. This area is badlands. The museum housing the dinosaur is amazing to see on the outside, but we didn't have time on this trip to go inside. The museum is built into the side of a hill, so the roof is actually grasslands! It is like the original house of the Ingalls family (Little House on the Prairie). Yes, I watched the show religiously as a child, which is probably why I was eager to move to the prairies from Ontario as an adult!
The museum blends with the environment, which is my favourite architectural element. Queen Hatshepsut's mortuary temple in Egypt, Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water (and others), Russel Wright's Dragon Rock, and many mid-century modern ranch houses all appeal to me because they don't try to dominate the environment. This museum successfully blends with rather than dominates the badlands. The windows reflect more badlands. Next time, I'll go inside to see Scotty. (but the exterior is probably more exciting to me!)
