Marvelous Marfa.

After driving about 200 miles from Las Cruces and dropping down into SW Texas on scenic FMT 17 (Farm to Market Road; thatís what they call many small roads here) we ended up (and, at 5200í, I do mean ďupĒ) at Davis Mountains State Park where we had a space reserved in the CG (RV speak for campground). Nice place, almost green by Texas standards and actually ringed by great hillocks and buttes.
We unhitched and raced back to the local attraction, Fort Davis, a sprawling and remarkably well...

Great Beginning. Bad ending.

Before hitting the road we drove to Lowell, about two miles from Bisbee to see the much read-about Shady Dell and Dotís Diner. Too cute for words. But Iíll tryówith the help of some pics. Like stepping back into the 50ísówithout all the A-Bomb fear. Itís a trailer park of restored Airstreams et al, that they rent by the night. The diner is tiny but just right. The gal that works the office is even dressed and coifed a la the 40ís/50ís.

Despite the charm of Dotís though, we broke...

A Tale of Two Cities

Posted 03-07-2010 at 08:35 AM by BillB44

After a hurried breakfast in the Spud we set out due east on I-10, veering south on 83, a scenic route. I guess, but makes me glad we didn't take the non-scenic route.
We climbed to 5,000 feet, which the truck didn't seem to enjoy, and moseyed into Tombstone around 1PM. On a Saturday. Not good timing. Besides being every bit as touristy as we were forewarned, it was also pretty durned crowded. We strolled the wooden sidewalks, hit several shops and tried to have lunch in Big-Nosed Kate's...

Tucson turmoil

Posted 03-07-2010 at 08:31 AM by BillB44

Found a so-so site for the 'Spud seven miles from downtown. But with full hook-ups--which brings a new appreciation: run water, use lights, flush john with abandon--and wi-fi, it is a luxury.
We unhooked with some comedic difficulty, then drove into Tucson. A little disappointed; didn't match my recollection from a brief visit to pitch the Penn Tennis Ball account.
We spent most of the time at the Tucson Art Museum which was a pleasure. Then, with two GPS's and four guide books, set...

Today was great. Only drove about 125 miles: East on 8 to Gila Bend, then hung a right (as in south) on 85, a two-laner in moderate condition with minimal traffic. We skirted the Barry Goldwater Air force Range for several miles, had lunch in a sleepy semi-Mexican-ish villa called Ajo. Cute place with a central plaza crying out for a taqueria or two but none to be found. Instead we ate at the Oasis (undoubtedly the most popular name for any from of attraction in any desert) Cafť. It clearly was...
