Farmington, N.M. & Aztec Ruins N.M.

Posted 03-27-2010 at 09:20 AM by BillB44

This is one of those uncertain days that turned out to be surprisingly great. We left Santa Fe at 10:30A, having decided to take our chances and continue north west. Last night we checked weather forecats for a dozen places north, west and south. None looked good. Winds, cold temps, rain and or snow. So, we decided if we were going to have rotten weather we might as well have it in a cool place.

So, after four hours of driving through some wild and colorful sandstone terrain and...

The High Road to Taos. The low road back. And some disappointments.

Posted 03-27-2010 at 09:12 AM by BillB44

After checking weather forecasts, maps, guides and books, we decided to spend one more night with the ‘Spud here in SF, and to take the truck on what everyone describes as a world-class drive-- the “High Road” from Santa Fe to Taos.

Got up early, did some more freelance assignments, had quick breakfast, paid for another night here then headed out at 10AM.
The road stumbles along at first, 35MPH thru small adobe neighborhoods, then it starts to open up and climb, as does the...

Day 3 @ Santa Fe=Work Before Play.

Posted 03-27-2010 at 09:05 AM by BillB44

We awoke to snow this AM. Crusty, frosty stuff over everything, but thawing rapidly under the cold, bright sun. We took a brisk walk, made breakfast, then spent the morning doing work; BB on many freelance projects, KB on trips to the laundry facility, going thru 25 quarters.
Around 1:30 we took off for a visit to one more museum--the Georgia O’Keefe. Very inspiring lady, life, work and words. Then, vaulting social strata, we hit Wal-Mart for a space heater (to conserve on propane) and, wonder...

Santa Fe in a Four-Museum Day.

Posted 03-25-2010 at 09:21 AM by BillB44

I'm convinced one of the reasons the truck labors pulling the ‘Spud up steep hills is the ginormous amount of weight on board in the form of travel books, guides, maps, journals and magazines. We are nothing if not well-informed long before we arrive.
So, forearmed and forewarned about the bounty of superb museums and eateries within ten miles of us, we arose early and started off with breakfast at an apparent local fave, The Pantry. Obviously formerly a small house, the cozy place has been...

Santa Fe. Hooray.

Had a simple cereal breakfast and were on the road by 10A. Made it to Santa Fe around 2:30 and got a site in the mostly vacant Santa Fe Skies RV Park on a hill overlooking the city. (Again, major kudos to campgroundreviews.com + the iPhone for making finding and ranking campsites so much easier than the old days...like ten years ago.)
This is a nice enough place, with full hook-ups plus wi-fi that actually works. Our game plan is to spend three nights here; lots to see and eat around these...
