Selling our 1979 Airstream Sovereign

Posted 06-17-2019 at 10:23 PM by Bowmans (This blog shows our renovation of a 1979 Sovereign 31' center bath AS)

With the 1950 road worthy (inside still empty) and plans to move to the Maryland area this summer, we are in the process of selling our 1979 31 Sovereign. We posted on Airstream Classifieds if you know anyone interested. We are located in Powhatan, VA which is about 45 minutes west of Richmond, VA. To add to the listing, we just bought two new batteries since the other two were about 6 years old. Happy streaming!

1950 Liner "Weeble" - Adding the belly pan and preping for shell-off

Posted 03-25-2018 at 09:03 PM by Bowmans (This blog shows our renovation of a 1979 Sovereign 31' center bath AS)

We took the winter off for the most part. We started back up in February with the belly pan on the to do list. We cut strips and bent using metal angle clamped to a saw horse and a rubber mallet for the "C" channel. Not the prettiest but since they will not be seen, they will work.

"C" channel cut and bent:

Then it was time to mount them to the floor. We used SS bolts and nylock...

1950 Liner "Weeble" - Rebuilt the door-in-a-door from scratch - Part 2

The next step was to attach the outside sheet to the sides. I used a small, hand-held duct bender to make the bends on the sides. Then cleco'd and solid riveted using the (oh so handy) plier like rivet tool from VTS. This tool was such a time saver.

Sheeting the door sides:

We are splitting this in to two postings due to the number of photos.

In late October 2017, we started work on the door. The original door was resheeted inside and out by Dave before we bought it and he said that it was found in a cow field after cows had walked all over it. The door-in-a-door was not there and once we took the inside sheet off, we realized there was no hope for this door. One frame rail had been spliced in 3 pieces, the other had two door knob holes and all had...

1950 Liner "Weeble" - Floor installed and roof vent made

In early October 2017, we mounted and epoxied the floor and made a cap for the roof vent.

The floor is bolted with elevator bolts and nyloc nuts except where it bolts through the frame. There we used self tapping screws. We broke a few elevator bolts off in the process but that step went fairly smooth. We then picked a retro sea blue for the epoxy on the floor. It will be covered throughout most of the camper except in a few spots in access areas. Shame, I like the color.
