Yes there is in all likelyhood stored energy in your awning unless all the springs are broken. If you are not familiar with your awning system you need to stop until you find out how service and maintenance is performed on your specific make/model. There can be a tremendous amount of stored energy just waiting to be released. I witnesses a winding rod being slung through the side of a neighbors trailer one time.

Download a service manual for your system before proceeding, or better yet seek the asistance of a knowledgable friend to help you out the first time you work on it. Just proceed with caution.
