Auxiliary tank dump valve plastic handle replacements

Hi there.

On the eve of a massive 6 day trip, the plastic pull thing on the top of the auxiliary tank dump valve decided to crack in two, and part ways with the steel rod.

Given that I am not inclined towards doing major surgery on the tank valve, and have no parts to do so even if I were so inclined, I'm here to ask for suggestions.

Is there a semi-permanent fix I can make that will give me something to pull up on when I want to dump the aux tank?

Maybe I'll tie some string around the groove.

Or I can always use my pliers, I suppose. And hammer it back down when I'm finished dumping. Yes, that's the ticket. Machinery always responds well when struck with a hammer.
