The company I'd avoid

I've had American Family for 30+ years and have no problems. Every company is nice until you file a claim. I filed one weather related claim about 10 years ago and it was handled quickly and fairly through American Family.

I would, however, avoid The Hartford. Last summer I was rear-ended at a stoplight while sitting on my motorcycle. No serious injuries, got a police report, etc. After a week of not being able to contact the other driver, I got a copy of the report and called her insurance company-The Hartford.

Hartford maintained that they "might" be liable if the insured contacted them but that she had not yet contacted them. They suggested waiting until she had the occasion to contact them and then we could "talk about it".

I then had the occasion to send a certified letter to the Missouri Department of Insurance, Financial Institutions, and Professional Registration. After about 5 days the Hartford suddenly decided that they would file a claim for me and try to find their insured another time.

I think insurance companies are a lot like Las Vegas casinos in that they don't build those multi-story glass and chrome buildings by giving money back to the customers.
