I did the trip in a HiLo travel trailer. It is a great trip.
The suspension is better on your Safari.
There is a book that has all the camp sites in Mexico with directions to them by Dwight and Terre Church. It is called Mexican Camping and should be for sale on
Amazon.com
By all means take your kayak. There is little surf in the Sea of Cortez and you should be able to launch in most places.
The road is narrow with no shoulder, rutted in someplaces, there are unbanked hairpins, and trucks and buses travel fast. I found the most comfortable speed 35 m.p.h. or less. Take your time and don't drive at night.
There has been reported crime close to the border but I feel the risk is slight in the daytime on the main roads.
