OK, you're correct about walking to school as I grew up in Sioux Falls, SD. Six miles, up hill both ways and it snowed from October to May.... at least in the 1940's and 50's.
Truth?... I did see the snow in a drift come off the roof and to the ground with no break in between. And 40 below zero was the coldest I remember.
