The member that the numbers were assigned to has a two year window to get them back. Once it has been more than two years you can ask for the number, and it will be assigned. I am sure if you have a letter from the former member you could get the existing number assigned pronto.
That being said I do know of a way to research the numbers. Chas provided a good starting point. Once you are a member you can stop in at top of Georgia Airstream Park. There thy have a library of the old member books going back for quite a few years (25? was the last I heard) and do some research. The difficult thing will be to determine what member with the number you currently have, owned that trailer. Good luck!!
