TBKP: We live in OK but have a small house on 40 acres we bought for retirement in MS close to wife's family. Have about 18 acres that has to be bush hoged, ( used to be in soy bean and cotton) the rest hard wood. Can't have cattle to keep the weeds down since we don't stay here and the wife's family no longer farms. I did spend my first 6 years on a dairy farm in MA. But that's another story. Farming today is no longer what it used to be....

Tim; Since I have some places (actually several) I am not satisfied with I plan to keep on going to completion knowing I will have to go back later and redo a panel here and there. I know now what to look for now and have sanding down as just another step in the process when I find a place that requires it. Only someone that has done this would even know there are flaws. I can live with that, for now. Besides my A/S lives outside uncovered and will require more attention now with no clear coat.

Good new is I figured it out. Bad news is, its going to be a lot more work.

Last night I spent re-reading in great detail two web sites. www.perfectpolish.com and http://globetrotter64.home.att.net/complete.htm .

What I have is the dreaded Filiform corrosion. You can see a picture of it at the Manning website .

So new techniques for new problems. I read over and over again the page on Using the compound polisher . What I learned was I was using too much polish and needed to over an area many many times.

G6 breaks down too quickly to fight this. F7 holds its cutting power throught the procedure.

So, what works is using F7 in very small amounts. Only working 12" x 12" area. Move the polisher slowly about 1inch/second. No extra pressure is needed, just whatever is comfortable and reasonable. Clean the bonnet with the spur tool. Add small amounts of polish and hit it again. Takes about 10 passes over an area to fully get rid of it.

I will try and take some pictures later. I did get my door done and the area immediatly to the right. Have not cyclo'ed it yet but I can see a big difference with the specks gone.

This is going to be a much bigger job than I have ever imagined because now that I know what to look for, it's all over my trailer

If your read carefully over the perfect polish site I gave, it talks about sanding and really recommends against it because of the way it finishes in the sunlight. Good reading...

Thanks for the reminder~ I also went back to reread the info..
I found it most helpful to do that..You know?
I think sometimes we (meaning me/I) get so wrapped up in what we're doing that, I lose sight of what's really the "procedure" to use. They certainly know their stuff~!~
The WX is still yuckie here and, I've just about given up on it, being that it's this late in the day..

As the day was winding down..I grabbed the keys and, went to get my "polish FIX"...lol

Worked for abt 2hr till it got too dark to tell what was happening..
Okay, that's dedication~!~
Finis up lower side panel that I had stopped on when I ran out of supplies. Later I started on the other one above it..GETTING there..

More rain today..then, afterwards...Sun shine~!~
I really got to push to make up for the lost time..
Here's a few taken this morning...This is one that I worked on late yesterday evening..It's about ready for the Cyclo polisher with S.
I'll have to wait and see what affects the rain has on the finis..

Hmmm I didn't know they had a Mytrle Beach in NH hehehe

Here is another one. Will have a few more later today. I'm suffering withdrawal No polishing yesterday due to other non important things and can't polish today.
This is my problem panel. you can see it is not up to the shine around the windows and that is just striped !! This panel has been redone three times from scratch

Question;
Is what I'm seeing the results of sandpaper used here?
You might need to check out the PerfectPolish site and, follow the instructions for the removeal of embedded grit, if that's the case.
I'll look for a follow up from you on what procedures used..

Keep in mind none of this was present or visible before I went over it with the compounder and F7.

OK, this shot is actually a different area but it had at least the same amount of corrosion as the other shots.

I went over it at least 10 times with F7 and the compounder.

Seems all that heavy duty compounding is leaving some pretty bad swirls that are not cleaning up easily.

I cyclo'd the door with F7, then S, and its pretty bad. This part of the door I did not go over and over it like the bottom part which is ok, but still has some swirls.

I think this top part had a lot of G6 used on it. But I cannot remember for sure. I have been over the door about three times. now.

I may have to compound with C to get the swirls out.

26.5 hours...

Whad do you guys think.

Tim I think your bad spots were worse than mine. As I said in some cases I just went on since it was not worth it to redo.

53FC yes that panel was the one that had the embeded black marks and a lot of very deep scratches. It was sanded with 600/1200/2000 compounded & polished. Looked good but didn't have the deep shine. I tried different things in different spots but it just won't really get that deep shine. I have done the same thing on two other panels and they look fine. I will go back to the PP site but I think this panel is a different type alumunum

Thanks for the info.....Sounds like the answer to my problem. By the way on my last pic you can see where I last stopped for the day at the end of the window. Should have good weather here all week and baring unexpected delays 2 days shoul about do it for me

I still can't take it out and show it off until I install new axles. that is scheduled for early next spring.

Put in 3 1/2 hrs this morning and think I can finish up this evening I can no longer polish in the AM sun gets to it to quick. The only thing I have left is the rear panels above and below the rear window.
Tim: That's a bummer you can't put on to much of the of compounding material I'm using ?? It is amaizing to watch the aluminum go from black to there I am looking at myself, I wish I had more SS, I could get a bettter shine with less effort, as it is I have to compound twice with the black stuff then switch to SS with the soft pad. If I could use the SS on the second compounding it would be easer.
