2008 Moraine View Rally

Greetings Rachelle!

In fact, we didn't have our first Winter storm until the second week in February (an ice storm that brought things to a stand-still for three days), then the very next week we had another ice storm that brought everything to a stand-still for two days, our most recent storm occurred the next week -- it dumped a meager 2.5 to 3.5 inches of snow in our region, but it was enough to cause our school to dimiss at noon and several others not too far away didn't have shool at all on the day of the snow.

I have been watching the weather reports for Northwest Illinois and Southwest Wisconsin and it seems like the region has been hit by nearly every winter storm passing anywhere along the Mississippi River managed to take bulls-eye aim on that area. In the 11 years that I lived in Northern Illinois/Southwest Wisconsin, I don't believe that there was a winter as snowy as this one -- at least based upon the reports that I have been reading.

We are on Spring Break this coming week, and I am hoping for continued temperatures in the low to mid 60s so that I can get out and get the Minuet and Overlander ready for the summer -- the '75 Cadillac also needs to go to the tire store to have its restored factory rims mounted with the new tires that I purchased for it nearly three years ago.

Spring will arrive one day not too far away. It looks like our daffodils are right on schedule to be in full bloom for Easter Sunday.

2008 Moraine View Rally -- Food Theme?

I had one thought about a possible food theme. I don't know how practical it would be. The theme that I had in mind is -- Grazing Across The Midwest -- My thought was that for the pot-luck we might prepare our favorite dish that has a tradition in the Midwest. Some that I have thought of include:
  1. Bierochs -- a Northwest Kansas specialty -- home-made pocket sandwiches filled with seasonsed crumbled ground beef, sauteed onions, and rinsed & drained saur kraut.
  2. Cornish Pasty -- a Wisoncin specialty -- home-made meat pie contianing seasoned crumbled ground beef, sauteed onions, and potatoes.
  3. HorseShoe Sandwiches -- Springfield and West-Central Illinois -- open faced sandwich featuring a hamburger, chicken patty, turkey patty, or thick slice of ham -- covered with crsip french fies and cheddar cheese sauce.
  4. SteamBurgers -- Northwest Illlinois/Quad Cities -- the home-made variant of the Maid Rite sandwich. Basically, crumbled hamburger cooked over boiling water (I have used a fine sieve over a stew pot -- ala-double-boiler) then flavored with a mixture of seasonings and served on a steamed bun -- some reipes add diced onion and a taste of garlic.
  5. Rivel Soup -- Far-Southwest Illinois -- based on a country German tradition -- this soup can feature either a vegetable broth or chicken broth -- seasoned with one to one-and-one-half pounds of country cured bacon fried crisp (two tablespoons of drippings used for seasoning with the balance being removed from the pot) -- then 5 pounds of potatoes are boiled in the broth -- when fork tender, the potatoes are diced, the pot is returned to a boil and homade rivel noodles/dumplings are thrown into the pot -- when the dumplings are done, the crumbled bacon is added and the soup is ready to serve.
I would guess that just about everyone has similar lists of food traditions from their region of the Midwest or other places where they have lived. I don't know how practical this would be, but thought that I would offer it as a suggestion.

We really enjoyed last year's potluck of just show up and bring a dish. A theme could be interesting, but like Kevin said, it may be pretty impractical.

What??

Impractical?? NO NO NO it can be done.
I might opt for a broader theme than Kevin's idea, but we should put all of our ideas in a (cyber) hat.

That would be ALOT of corn, and although I love corn chips, and a few other things...All things corn wouldn't be the most appetizing to me, but others could digg it. I will be bringing a new fangled thing that we have been making about a month now called Armadillo Eggs. We take a piece of cheddar cheese and slice of jalapeno, and encase it in breakfast sausage (Looks like an egg). We throw them on the smoker for a few hours, and end up with quite possibly the most delicious treat ever.

We received our reservation today. We are in P41 and our friends the Whitesell's are in P42. We have an Classic 30 trailer and the Whitesells a 25 International.

Now for you long time posters - I thought that it is interesting that I am next to Jack. How come this site would be open? What am I missing? I've met Jack and he is a really nice guy.

We were able to attend the 2006 Moraine View forum rally and had a great time. Looking forward to it again.

Jack - were happy to be next to you. We'll be arriving on Friday around noon.

Hi Dave. Through the fog I remember spinone italiano dogs. Right?

I see a Whitesell from Chicago. Can you provide an AIR Forums username to help Jack out? Thanks!

Yes, I've been in P42 before -- it's a good area. We're just wary of when [is it one of Cottage's or Shabika's boys?] discovers motors...

CannoeStream:

Bob Whitesell is not registered on the Air Forums as he hasn't had time to post so he doesn't have a screen name. So I listed Bob's last name. He is from Chicago and attended Moraine View in 2006. Great guy as all the Moraine View people are.

I always thought that my snoring might disturb my neighbors, but Back in the days before 30-AMP service at the International Rallys, I inadvertently developed a reaction to insomnia that my usual next-door neighbor likes to kid me about to this day. When I am having trouble sleeping, I usually put my copy of The Long, Long, Trailer in the VCR -- what I didn't realize that my chuckling at several of the hillarious segments could be heard nextdoor -- the other dead give-away was the frequent sound of the New Moon's doorbell. One trip where we had caravanned together to the International Rally, my purchases of geode bookends at several stops just added "fuel to the fire" to the kidding that I received about listening to The Long, Long, Trailer -- I still use this same device to get to sleep several times each season, but with Air Conditioning my neighbors rarely know that its playing.
