Hardwood would work and not be too hard or expensive to do. Just watch which way the grain runs, as your newly finished piece will break at the corner (stress area) if the grain isn't running right. In northern CA, you may try a hot rod/motorcycle fabrication shop. A water jet and some thick aluminum will do the trick...albeit a bit pricey.
