SilverGate, I can't speak to the Airstream specific issues you are asking about, but our one year old kitchen micro started acting strange like that. Turns the magnatron (I think that is what the microwave transmitter is called) was bad and causing the other electronics to go nuts. This is something that you definately want to have checked by a qualified technician. You could hurt yourself and other components in the camper if the magnitron is indeed bad. If it's still under warranty, let them do it. If not, microwaves are cheap these days....

we fulltime in our 28 ft AS , that did not come with a microwave. We also bought one from Walmart $44 and it is very inconvenient ,because of no place to put it... but it works fine

Microwave problem solving...

Hey SilverGate, you raised an interesting concern, especially of interest to newbies…
Glad you found your answer, albeit on another knowledge sharing forum:
http://my.boatus.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=54322
Very creative of you to search boating forums since many of the same appliances used in RV’s and travel trailers are used in boats and yachts.
So you found a boater who’s Tappan had the same symptoms as yours…
And you learned that Tappan made some of the early microwaves in the 60’s…
Practically wrote the book on microwaves!

Good idea checking your AS Owners Manual, which told you that only federally certified technicians are permitted to service microwave ovens. That info helped to prevent what would have been a totally unnecessary, disappointing and frustrating trip to the dealer!

You read your Tappan Microwave Owner’s Manual and found out…
That Tappan microwaves are distributed by a company, ICM, InterCon Marketing.
Their web site, http:// www.interconmktg.com, lists the following phone number for service: 941-355-4488.
(Glad that at least that manual was not one of the twenty or so missing from your Airstream Delivery Case presented to you by your dealer).

And speaking of great customer support often lacking these days...
You found that a short and pleasant call to InterCon Marketing has a brand new microwave coming your way within 5 business days (since you are within ICM’s 1 year warranty).

BTW, SilverGate sends thanks to Jim for addressing his concerns!

We had a micro in our last trailer and no conventional oven. We had plans to remove the micro, and put in a regular oven. We just get more use out of a regular oven. We often camp off the grid and don't have 120 volts.
As mentioned above, it's a lifestyle choice.
