That's interesting - re the raining vs dry! This is the first real problem I've had with the mirrors and it happened just after I came home from the car wash. I was thinking that it might have been due to the mirror being wet - as I sprayed it with the high-pressure rinse. Live and Learn! I do exercise the mirrors regularly. For the record - I assume you are referring to the "extension" part of the mechanism. I've never had any problem with the tilt and pan mechanism.
