Your coolest Nestea Plunge?

Here we are, right coast to left coast and everywhere in between, in the middle of a national heat wave. Let's play mind games. Maybe if we conjure up our collective coolest moments camping, we'll have a forum-wide cooldown. Okay, I'll begin: many moons ago, in another Missouri heat wave, Max and I took our four teens and their friends on a float on the upper Current River. We knew camp would be an oven, but even on the river, we were roasting. We floated, waded, and pulled our canoes down as far as Welch Spring and Cave. Talk about a Nestea Plunge! We dove and splashed and generally made like fish and otters. The water flowing from the spring was in the 50's, champagne delicious on a sweltering summer day. The boys, of course, had to do the no-no of swimming down and up into the cave, scaring the &%^#$@# out of me, but that was their kind of fun. What I'd give to be back there today! Okay, I feel cooler already remembering. Anyone else have a "cool" story to share today?

Wow, those are great cool images for such a humid day! Going way back to 1971 I remember jumping into Lake Huron with my cousins on Memorial weekend, uh if you are from this part of the country you would know we were children and didn't know better I'm sure there were some blue lips and fingertips...That was a Nestea plunge! Grandma was wearing a sweater on shore shaking her head and smiling. She may have had a thermos for her coffee I don't know...

back in the summer of 1980...
hottest recorded in my parts...
3 chums and i went to the ozarks;
it was only 1 oh 5 there.
on the way home,
in my honda
that had no conditioned air'
we stopped at every 'tavern in route...
for a cool one.
eventually we needed honda fuel,
and a softer drink...
so we stopped at a seveneleven.
due to my previous choice of hydration....
i inadvertently filled the tank...
with cherry slurpee...
the fuel tank.
car started and drove fine,
when someone hit the a/c switch...
out from the vents floated
frosty red stuff;
lots of is.
well the inside temp
started to fall...
near minus 40
as i recall,
and pretty soon
we was frozen near solid.
i managed to break loose
and slide out
leaving me buds...
as bud-cubes.

years later i went back
to the very place...
along the roadway.
all that was left
was an ice pick
stuck in a red stain...
with a note
simply written...
burrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Hubby had just crawled out from under the Airstream today after reinstalling the black tank and remarked that "even though it was the coldest water I ever felt, I would give anything to be standing in the Pacific off the Oregon coast looking at those starfish"... referring to an early June trip in 1990 when we rolled up our pant legs and waded out to some rocks after the tide had gone out, leaving the most gorgeous starfish we had ever seen.

I was trying to visualize standing on the Athabasca Glacier in British Columbia or the white water raft ride shortly thereafter. How refreshing!!!

But it is HOT here - even the well water is warm!!!

Plus we subsequently went to Ambruscos to pick up our drapes, the first customers he had ever met in person! That was cool.

These miserable hot days remind me of my childhood ( in the 50's) in central valley in California. Regularly over 100 degrees each day, and night time would be a cool and comfortable 94 or so.... naturally we didn't have airconditioning or even a "swamp" cooler.... we would sometimes get up at 2:00 am in the morning and go down to the local swimming hole and cool off so we could actually sleep. It has been pretty hot here this summer, but when it gets really bad we "retire" to the study, turn on the air conditioner, and surf the airstream forum!

Here is a "cool" plunge possibility from last winter... the creek down the road from our home.

Whew, just reading each anecdote is a cool down. Outside today, the heat makes breathing hard; inside, what relief! Outside, nothing is moving. The birds are silent, no splashes on the pond, only butterflies flitting. I feel so sorry for those who have no place to retreat from such heat, and I know they are many. Today, I cranked up the ac and with my daughter's help, we started the ceiling repair for Gypsy. My son and I had tried using strips to hold up the droopy ceiling earlier last week, but several snapped at the tightest curve. Susie and I just worked out a pattern with 5/8 inch screws and button covers. Cute and effective! I think AS should have done this on all those '90's ceilings in the first place, or called them all in and made good their poor product. Any way, hot day, cool ac, project well underway! Not bad ~G

What is making the heat bearable today, as I start to pack stuff in the Airstream, is the thought of the plunge I am going to take off the family's dock (on Lake George, NY) when we arrive next weekend!!! I've spent many summers swimming in that beautiful lake, and can hardly wait to get there! --dave

Winter camping has the advantage of no bugs and the fridge stays really cold, don't even need to pull your awnings, however a shovel to get into your site will help.
