Adding Air to 1969 Caravel-Help

I have purchased a 1969 Caravel and would like to replace the furnace with an airconditioning unit. My trailer will be in Texas quite a bit, and I really need air more than heat. Has anyone done this? Does anyone have any recommendations?

I am clueless on what exactly to do... I am actually quite mechanically challenged. However, most good folks here are quite talented in that area! My hubby and I have a 1963 Bambi and we have installed a room airconditioner under one of the couches to vent into the cabin. It isn't finished yet so my husband's thread (search NorCal Bambi floor replacement) probably won't give you much... however, I think that the following thread might have details, if I remember correctly. http://www.airforums.com/forum...ler-11687.html

Anyway, I would do a search and read through the threads. Lots of people post pics and all so you can see what they did!

I just installed a Carrier Air-V (low Profile) unit on my '65 globe trotter.

the job turned out taking a little longe because I had to run power to it.

As for yours, you could look into the air-v and have it sitting ontop, which is likely the most efficient place for an ac. I have seen a unit from Dometic that can be installed on the floor, but you have to cut a hole in the outside. I seriously thought about it but decided to stick with what I've seen work already.

One thing you might consider is a portable unit. If your heater is big enough, when replaced you might be able to slide an AC into it's place. The exhaust could use the existing vent. There are a number of good places online to buy portable units. One site located in texas is called www.compactappliance.com

SOB's are sure getting ugly.................

Have to say, that's alot of cooling for the small space. Maybe the AC nise cuts down on the generator noise.

If you dont have an AC installed already, or if you do, Put in a new Carrier or Duo Therm Penguin. The low profiles! They work great and don't overwhelm the size of the Caravel. The 69 has an interior roof paneling that has two parallel raised areas. A special roof panel has to be made up to make a level interior mounting surface. The 69 has provisions for condensation drain...you will need it here in Texas. If I ever get a camera I will post pics.

I worked in downtown Dallas for years with SWBT...family is still in that area. What is a Palomino...keep in mind I am a newbie and a female one at that!! Also, when I say, "I did this...." I am usually referring to hiring someone to have it done...lots of these messages are Greek to me. Y'all will have to say "How would I explain this to my Mother?" for me to understand.

Where is Kiln, MS? My family originated from Lawrence, CO, MS...still lots of cousins in that area.

Kiln (pronounced "KILL") is in the SW corner of the State of Mississippi just north of I-10. Closest town of note would be Waveland and Bay Saint Louis. Just a crossroads town with no real industry. Grown some since Katrina with all the displaced people from "The Coast". Great place to live.

I know where Sevierville, TN is and that's a very nice place.

I recently installed a Carrier Air V low profile in a '72 Safari. The plastic cover of the 'lower unit' of course did not fit the curve of the interior roof. My solution (after checking with Carrier tech dep't), was to scribe the front and rear to match the curve and then trim the sides (about 1/2"IIRC). The panel then fit the roof contour perfectly and it properly mated to all of the controls as well. It is OK to cut tis cover as long as you do not interfere with any of the control surfaces.
