The original Hornet, CV-8, was disabled and sunk in Oct 42. I know a plank-owner (original crew member) from Alameda's
CV-12 Hornet. He was an aircraft engine mechanic. From commissioning in Nov 43 until returning to San Francisco near war's end, he never left the ship. Such were the demands of war.
He did the Alameda tour about 6-7 years ago. After standing in line for the guided tour it brought tears when told he had full liberty to tour the ship without escort.
