if you look in the glove compartment of your truck you may find a bundle of wires with a square plug on the end.
this is the factory brake controller harness that gm was nice enough to include with all of their trucks equipped for towing.
this is a true plug and play setup, go get an electric brake controller (around 50 bucks) and follow the instructions on both the harness and the controller. there are 4/5 wires to connect. very simple. the square plug goes into the top of the junction box just above where your left foot sits.
mounting the controller is simple also because chevy has provided some holes for it on the lower edge of the dash. the holes are directly below the steering column.
then follow the instructions that come with the controller to set the amount of braking power you want.
your z71 should do a real nice job with a trailer of that size.
