The owner's manual for our '72 states that the bathroom counters are made so that the color is uniform through the counter. I have dry sanded (very fine grade paper) around our bathroom sink to remove some of the sun chalking and some rust stains and will apply gel coat when finished.While I assume your '74 is the same, you will really want to check an owner's manual to be sure.
